About Me

Textile still moves me!

Willy Doreleijers
Artist Statement

Willy Doreleijers has been fascinated by textiles from an early age. After a technical fashion education, she followed a 2-year education for textile teachers.
In addition, she received intensive motivational guidance from two professional artists for a number of years. Both teachers at the Art Academies of Maastricht and Arnhem. She also finds a lot of inspiration with an architect.

Willy achieves her own reality with her abstracted artworks. It draws attention to the influence of humans on their living environment. The evolution of techniques from a distant past into the unknown future is a common thread. It is interesting how she interprets depth in a completely unique way.

Her form rich compositions are characterized by her bold use of color and structure. She likes to experiment with different techniques to push the boundaries in her pieces of art and to discover new possibilities.

Willy: “As an artist, my artwork forms the crucial link between my interest in textiles, art and architecture. I get inspiration from everyday subjects and I have developed a recognizable style that reinforces the theme and has its own specific appearance. My challenge is to make textile pieces of art with surprising effects.
I want to lead the viewer to a visual confrontation. Whether the result is completely abstract or reality made abstract, the meaning will become clear by itself. It is my way of expressing a story.”

Her Textile Art Studio is located in Dordrecht the oldest city of Holland, where she also lives with her husband and two cats. Willy her artworks travel all over the world. They can be seen in museums, galleries, textile events and private institutions.

“Doreleijers work hovers between realism and abstraction; there is recognisable subject matter, but form is often presented in an unusual way and may not be understood. The clever blending together of line and colour to create visual impact is a significant characteristic of her work”.
Dr. Sue Marks, completed her doctoral dissertation on the positioning of quilts within the visual arts in 2006.

“Dynamic use of line defines much of Willy Doreleijers’work. Lines crisscross, emerge and disappear, explode and fade. While some of her pieces are very colorful, it is her use of line that creates the tremendous sense of energy. Willy also delights in playing games with the viewers – now you see the image; now you don’t, as shapes advance and recede from the picture plane. Each viewing brings new delights.”
